The statutory route into the practice of architecture in Nigeria: an accredited qualification, the period of training, then the Council's registration examination — Part A for the architect, with Parts B and C for technicians and artisans. This track follows what the examination actually demands of a graduate: a design process that survives from brief to detail, the structural and services logic behind the drawing, the documents and contracts that carry a project to completion, and the approvals, liability and public-interest duties that make registration meaningful. Sustainability, urban design and conservation are treated as core professional work, not optional extras.

From Brief to Detail: the Design That Survives Construction

Brief and site analysis, structural systems and load paths, environmental design, services, materials and construction detail, setting out and the drawing package.

What a registration design paper is testing

Not taste. It tests whether a candidate can hold a design together under examination: whether the plan solves the brief, whether the section could be built, whether the loads go anywhere, and whether the details keep water out. The examiner reads for consequence — a corridor that cannot be escaped from, a flat roof with no fall, a column that has become a window, a bathroom with no vent — and a candidate who has drawn without deciding loses on all four counts within a page. So the method matters more than the composition. Establish the requirements and their areas; stack the rooms by the relationship the users actually have, not by the diagram's symmetry; give the building its spine and its two or three ways out; put the structure on a grid that the services and the façade can share; and then test the result against three questions in order: can a user find their way, can a builder build it, and can the environmental strategy carry it without a machine for every degree? A design that answers those three survives the viva; one that only looks resolved does not.

Brief, site and the parti

A brief is a set of numbers and a set of conflicts, and the professional act is to name both. Room schedule with areas and occupancies, the relationships that must be direct and the ones that must be separated (a kitchen against a treatment room, a generator under a bedroom), the budget and the maintenance level the client can actually sustain, and the phasing the client has not yet noticed. The site analysis then converts the constraints into design decisions: the sun path and the season it hurts, the prevailing wind and the dusty harmattan that argues for a filtered lobby, the water table and the flooding that decides whether the ground floor can hold plant, the noise and the neighbours that decide where the quiet rooms go, and the access points a fire appliance can actually reach and turn in. The parti is the sentence the whole scheme can be checked against — 'a linear clinic on a spine with a waiting hall at the near end and an isolation wing that can be closed off' is a parti; 'an airy modern building with a strong entry' is not, because nothing could be tested against it. Draw the parti as a bubble diagram, then as a massing section, then as a plan: at every translation ask which requirement it answers. A candidate who can say in the viva 'I placed the circulation here because the brief needed the two wings separable during an outbreak' has demonstrated the thing being examined — the reason, not the drawing.
